Mercedes-Benz Unveils 2014 C63 AMG Edition 507

While most AMG Mercedes-Benz cars use turbochargers to make their eye-popping horsepower numbers, the C63 AMG is one of only three models to make its power without forced induction. In case you thought the C63 AMG engine’s future was unclear, AMG just released a new special edition C63 that uses some engineering witchcraft to tune the 6.2-liter V-8 all the way up to 507 horsepower. 

The car is, predictably, called the “Edition 507,” a nod to the fact that it makes 507 ponies and 450 lb-ft of torque. For those keeping score at home, that’s exactly 56 more horsepower than the stock C63 AMG coupe, which makes an already impressive 451 hp. It’s also 26 hp more than the current-model-year C63 AMG with the $6050 AMG Development Package, which ups the power output to 481 hp and the top speed to 174 mph. The Development Package is going away for the 2014 model year, to be replaced by Edition 507.

That 507 horsepower comes from a beast of an engine: it’s AMG’s M156, a 6208-cc V-8 (commonly referred to as a 6.3-liter). For the Edition 507, AMG adds forged pistons like the ones fitted to the SLS AMG, new connecting rods, and a lighter crankshaft. The result is an engine with 6.6 fewer pounds of rotational mass.

Because the Edition 507 replaces this year’s Development Package, it also includes that package’s other goodies. They include 19-inch tires (235-section fronts, 255-section rears) and lightweight alloy wheels, an aluminum hood with two new cooling grilles like on the C63 AMG Black Series, and a top speed of 174 mph. As with the Development Package, the Edition 507 car also includes an upgraded brake system that includes lightweight discs (14.2 inches up front), six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers, and a different friction compound for the pads. The calipers, predictably, are painted red. To make sure that drivers know how to harness the car’s performance, Mercedes-Benz is including a voucher for the AMG Driving Academy with every Edition 507 sold.

On the inside, Mercedes offers a selection of porcelain or black design leather with Dinamica microfiber inserts, and the steering wheel is covered in Alcantara with contrast stitching. The dials have red appliqués, and the trim pieces are finished in piano black. As with almost all special edition cars, there’s a special Edition 507 badge on the passenger’s side trim.
While we do know that the Edition 507 package will be available on the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG sedan or coupe, and we know that the cars will go on sale this summer, we haven’t heard how much they will cost. We expect that they’ll ring in slightly above the current cars ($68,380 for a Coupe with the Development Package, $65,850 for the Sedan with the Development Package), so a $70,000 price tag wouldn’t be out of the question.
