Military’s 1.8-gigapixel camera can record surveillance video of entire small city

Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which is the high-tech arm of the US military is always working on groundbreaking gadgets to empower its military. We recently reported about the Star Wars like laser it has created for the jet fighters.

surveillence Militarys 1.8 gigapixel camera can record surveillance video of entire small cityNow another project of DARPA has came under spotlight. The project that first surfaced back in 2009 is about a 1.8-gigapixel camera which will be used for surveillance. The video camera typically used for surveillance is called the ARGUS-IS. It is capable of recording extremely high resolution images of anything from the height of around 15,000 feet.

The actual footage taken by ARGUS-IS was revealed in a recent PBS video. You can see its ability of taking high quality videos in action at about 1:55 minutes in the Youtube video below.
ARGUS-IS is so powerful that it can take full video of a small city at a single time, which can be half the size of Manhattan and allow authorities to do a video surveillance of the whole area.

Although technology behind this 1.8-gigapixel camera is mind blowing the negative uses of such a tech by governments are even more mind boggling. May be not in the US but citizens of countries with overly attached governments wouldn’t like a device that is capable of providing this level of surveillance.
